Town of Mooresville Warns of Permit Payment Scam

by | Oct 10, 2025

The Town of Mooresville is warning residents and business owners about a scam targeting individuals with recent or pending permit applications. According to the Planning and Community Development Department, fraudulent invoices are being sent out that appear to come from the Town and request payment to process or move permit applications forward.

Officials say scammers are using publicly available information—such as the names of Town staff, board and commission members, and legitimate Town addresses—to make their communications appear authentic. These tactics are designed to mislead recipients into believing the invoices are official government documents.

Town officials emphasize that all legitimate permit payments are handled exclusively through the Town’s official permitting platform, Geocivix. Residents and business owners are urged to verify any payment requests directly with the Planning and Community Development Department or the Building Permits Office before sending money by mail.

The Town also notes that it does not request or accept payments through wire transfer, Venmo, PayPal, or any other third-party payment service.

Anyone who receives a suspicious invoice or communication related to permit payments is asked to contact the Planning and Community Development Department at 704-662-7040.
