The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services has confirmed the first case of measles in the state this year. According to health officials, a child visiting Forsyth and Guilford counties became ill while traveling from another country where outbreaks have been reported.
Individuals who visited certain locations in Kernersville or Greensboro between Thursday, June 19, and Sunday, June 22, may have been exposed.
Measles cases have been rising across the United States. The number of confirmed cases surged from 59 in 2023 to 285 in 2024. As of June 19, 2025, there have been 1,214 confirmed cases nationwide.
Measles is highly contagious and can lead to serious complications. The disease is especially dangerous for babies, young children, and people who are pregnant. Children who have not been vaccinated are at the highest risk.
